With an increase in the prize money pool to $60,000 plus custom trophies, prizes and calcuttas, this is the one shark tournament you won’t want to miss. Last year, over $438,000 was paid out; the big winners were the crew of Capt. Ed Poller’s “Pea Pod,” whose 154 lb. Mako netted the crew just shy of $300,000! So mark your calendars for the 26th Annual Star Island Yacht Club Shark Tournament to be held from June 14-16, 2012. The captain’s meeting will be held on Thursday, June 14th, with fishing Friday and Saturday, June 15th and 16th. The awards ceremony and dinner will follow fishing on Saturday night, accompanied by live music and dancing under the stars!!

For those anglers who wish to get in on the action and don’t own a boat, The Star Island Yacht Club charter fishing fleet is home to Montauk’s finest and most knowledgeable charter captains. Their boats can accommodate up to 6 anglers and are available for ONE or BOTH days of the tournament!!

In addition to this outstanding competition, all sportsmen can contribute to the studies of the shark by tagging and releasing sharks that don’t meet strict weight requirements. Last year, over 300 sharks were released back to the ocean. Of the sharks that were weighed in, over 750 pounds of edible shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches’ food pantry to help feed those in need!

The Eleventh Annual Montauk Mercury Grand Slam fishing tournament

Montauk Harbor on August 20th and 21st, 2011, at Uihlein’s Marina.

This two-day tournament has tripled in size from the first year, with the hope of continued growth again this year. This tournament, with the support of many large sponsors, also now features a large display of boats representing the various sponsors. All sponsors’ products will be on display the week of the tournament.

It is a one-of-a-kind in-shore event keyed to catching the largest grouping of four species: sea bass, striped base, fluke and bluefish. Individual catches will be judged as well.

This year’s tournament will consist of three Divisions: Private Recreational, Charter Boats, and Party/Open Boats.

The grand prize in the Private Recreational Division will be a Mercury OptiMax 225-horsepower engine valued at more than $15,000.

The first place prize in the Charter Boat division will be a cash award of 50% of the entry fees in that division, and The Acme Marine Hoist Angler’s Cup, to be retained by the winning charter boat, until the 2012 Tournament.

The first place winner in the Party/Open Boat division will be presented a cash prize and the coveted Angler’s Award, which will be retained by the most recent winning boat until the 2012 tournament.

Individual anglers in any of the Private and Charter Boat Divisions will win a cash prize for the largest catch of any of the four Grand Slam species.

Individual anglers in the Party Boat Division will win a cash prize for the largest catch in any of the four Grand Slam species.

All Children will receive a plaque sponsored by Cablevision.

All children under the age of 14 that catch any of the four species will be automatically entered into a raffle to win an 11-foot Mercury inflatable boat with an outboard motor.

Registration, rules and entry fee information are at www.montaukgrandslam.org; or call Sharon Buckler at (631) 561-9135; or send an e-mail request to uihleinsmarina@hotmail.com.
